
Nearly 100 students from Livada recently took part in an educational visit to the rain garden developed through the SPONGECITY project, where they had the opportunity to learn more about nature-based solutions that help manage stormwater and support communities in adapting to climate change.
During the visit, the students learned about the role of rain gardens in reducing flood risks, naturally filtering water, and creating green spaces that benefit the environment. The project experts explained how this green infrastructure works and why it is important to find sustainable solutions to the climate-related challenges faced by our towns and communities.
The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss environmental protection, the responsible use of water resources, and the importance of involving younger generations in building more resilient and nature-friendly communities. Through practical examples and age-appropriate explanations, the children were able to see how a relatively simple solution can have a significant positive impact on both the environment and the quality of life in their community.
The project “SPONGECITY – Improving the capacity of cities to adapt to climate change by testing and promoting the ‘Sponge City’ methodology at a transnational level” aims to analyse hydro-climatic characteristics and water management practices in 12 communities, to create a model supporting the planning of urban water management measures, and to test and promote tools through participatory development of local action plans, feasibility studies and small-scale investments. 13 partners are involved in the project implementation, and the strategic associated partner of the Satu Mare County Intercommunity Development Association is the city of Livada. The project is funded by the Danube Region Programme, has a total value of 2,028,509.20 eur, and the budget allocated to the association is 164,500 eur.
