Promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy through cross-border cooperation between Romania, Ukraine, and Hungary

Renewable energy for health: Cross-border cooperation for energy efficiency and photovoltaic systems for healthcare institutions in the border region

A new initiative focused on improving energy efficiency in healthcare institutions through renewable energy solutions is set to begin, thanks to the cross-border collaboration between Romania, Ukraine, and Hungary. The Satu Mare County Intercommunity Development Association will implement the SMART ENERGY – Cross-border cooperation for energy efficiency through the use of renewable energy sources project as the lead partner, in partnership with the Zakarpattia Regional Development Agency (Ukraine) and the Municipality of Újfehértó (Hungary).

The main objective of the project is to strengthen cross-border cooperation in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy by implementing joint activities that increase knowledge, raise awareness, and contribute to a greater use of renewable energy sources.

The project includes:

Installation of photovoltaic systems

  • At the Satu Mare County Emergency Hospital
  • At the municipal clinic in Uzhhorod
  • At three medical offices in Újfehértó

Public awareness campaign

  • Promoting renewable energy and its benefits

Experience exchange programs

  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and best practices among healthcare and energy experts from the three countries

The total project budget amounts to EUR 625,471.86, of which EUR 562,924.67 is funded by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Next Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine program. The project implementation period starts on February 15, 2025, and lasts for 18 months.

By the end of this period, significant progress is expected in implementing energy efficiency measures and increasing the use of renewable energy, both among the participating organizations and within cross-border communities. Beyond immediate energy savings, the project aims to serve as a model for future green energy initiatives in the region. These efforts will not only reduce energy costs but also strengthen cooperation between institutions, raise public awareness of sustainable energy solutions, and create opportunities for future projects focused on renewable energy and environmental sustainability. The long-term impact of the project extends beyond the participating institutions, contributing to the overall development of a more energy-efficient healthcare sector and promoting the use of green energy solutions in the region.
